Pauline Black is the living embodiment of the 2-Tone music movement, which helped push British society toward diversity and brought a whole new ethos to the fight against racism, sexism, and gender politics—an ethos we continue to strive for today. Her band, The Selecter—which will also perform at the 20th edition of Mighty Sounds—has a unique sound and energy defined by Pauline’s distinctive voice and stage presence. Like their fellow 2-Tone artists, The Selecter reflected working-class life in England during Margaret Thatcher’s reign, placing particular emphasis on the fight against racism and sexism; their music was social commentary.
Pauline’s remarkable life story mirrors her art and music and shapes her activism—through Pauline’s unique and extraordinary experiences with adoption, abuse, identity, gender, and resilience, we see how one woman’s pioneering and groundbreaking experience serves as a relevant and essential lens through which to view race and women from postwar Britain to the present day. Pauline is an empowered woman who stood on her own two feet and left her mark on society—an inspiration to an entire generation of women that cannot be overlooked.
